Downtown Elk City Work-Progress Report: Water Main Replacement and Storm Drain ProjectMay 16, 2023HometownTV’s Gabe Edney was in downtown Elk City today, bringing you the latest updates on the ongoing infrastructure projects. He had the opportunity to speak with City Employee Jay Roberts, who provided a work-progress report on the current developments. One of the major projects highlighted is the replacement of an old 6″ water main with a new 12″ PVC water main. This upgrade is being done in preparation for the Main Street Renovation project scheduled by the highway department early next year. The city is taking proactive measures to ensure a smooth transition and improved infrastructure. Additionally, Gabe mentions that work will soon commence on the storm drain replacement project on Broadway. The project will start at Main Street and gradually progress eastwards towards the creek. Sheriff Manning provides a brief overview of a recent incident involving a threat, chase, and shooting that unfolded in the community. Join us as we delve into the details surrounding this incident and the response of law enforcement. According to the Elk City Police Department, the incident began when an individual made a threat at a local car dealership. Officers were promptly dispatched to the scene, where they encountered the suspect attempting to flee. In the process, the suspect intentionally ran over a motorcycle, leading to serious injuries for at least one person involved. Sheriff Manning reveals that the suspect managed to elude the pursuing officer after the officer experienced a blowout while attempting to stop him. Oklahoma Highway Patrol joined the pursuit and collaborated with a skilled dispatcher who initiated the process of tracking the suspect’s location. Eventually, the suspect was located near Canute but resisted arrest by barricading himself in a vehicle. Tragically, the situation escalated when the suspect began firing at officers, prompting them to return fire, resulting in the suspect’s demise. Manning explains that the training is designed to give deputies an alternative to using deadly force in situations where it may not be necessary. During the training, deputies were taught how to use less lethal weapons such as tasers, bean bag rounds, and pepper spray. Manning notes that while these weapons are not completely risk-free, they do provide a less lethal option that can help prevent unnecessary injuries or deaths. Elk City Hotel Being Torn Down, Says City Manager Tom IvesterMay 2, 2023HometownTV’s Nathan Brewer sat down with Elk City City Manager Tom Ivester in the KECO 96.5FM studio to discuss the recent news of the demolition of the old Red Carpet Inn. According to Ivester, the hotel, which was formerly the LaQuinta, was declared dilapidated by the city commission and is privately owned. The owners have decided to tear it down, “hopefully for future development.” Ivester estimated the cost of the project to be between $150,000 and $200,000 for the tear down. The hotel’s demolition marks the end of an era for Elk City, but city officials are hopeful that future development will bring new opportunities to the area.
